Steve described experiencing bursts of energy or sparks of energy in learning new things that he had been aware of but didn’t understand before, and he characterized such experiences as positive: “Positive is anything that feeds my mind and keeps me progressing forward, as defined by the society.” Whenever he learned something new, at “the core part of it are those little flashes of light that propelled me on to the next level.” A sense of competence (or even pride), wonder, and victory was conveyed in his clarification: “The empowerment came from—that's it? Is that all there is?” A perceived barrier had just disappeared.
